First edition of Officers of Our Union Army and Navy; Their Lives, Their Portraits, Vol. I, edited by Dean Dudley and published in 1862 by L. Prang & Co. of Boston and Washington, D.C. No further volumes were issued. Louis Prang, the Prussian-born Boston lithographer later known as the father of the American Christmas card, founded L. Prang & Co. in 1860 and built his early business on Civil War material, issuing maps of Charleston Harbor within a day of the attack on Fort Sumter and producing war maps, album cards and portraits throughout the conflict. This pocket-size volume pairs short biographies of the Union's leading officers with engraved oval portraits beneath a spread eagle, each captioned L. Prang & Co. Boston & Washington. Complete copies call for 30 portraits. Pictured are Gen. Ambrose Burnside, Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth, Gen. John C. Fremont, Gen. George McClellan, Gen. Winfield Scott and Gen. Daniel E. Sickles, and the contents also list Robert Anderson, Nathaniel Banks, Franz Sigel, John E. Wool and others. The preface is dated Boston, February 24, 1862, less than a year into the war. Original brown cloth with gilt title on the front cover, approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Covers show wear, fading and soiling; interior pages are toned with scattered foxing.
