The 1888 N124 Duke “Presidential Possibilities” set is a complete 25-card, unnumbered tobacco-card series issued by W. Duke, Sons & Co. to promote Honest Long Cut Tobacco. Lithographed in color by The Giles Company of New York, the cards feature portraits of prominent American political figures considered possible contenders for the presidency during the 1888 election cycle. The checklist includes Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley Jr., Robert Todd Lincoln, James G. Blaine, John Sherman, Russell A. Alger, and other leading statesmen of the period. Measuring approximately 2½ × 4⅛ inches, the large-format chromolithographed cards are particularly striking examples of late-19th-century political and tobacco advertising. A complete 25-card N124 set is seldom encountered intact, making it an important early American political card issue as well as a significant 19th-century nonsport tobacco set.
