The popular R114 U.S. Caramels Presidents set can be found with 3 distinct background colors--red, blue and orange. The James Polk Cancelled Back offered is rare as only complete sets with the short printed McKinley card would receive the stamp if redeemed.

U.S. Caramel was one of the many candy companies in the Boston, Massachusetts area of the 1930's and, like many of the others, inserted cards in their gum products to help them sell. It noted that by saving all 31 pictures and returning them to the U.S. Caramel Company in Boston, Massachusetts, the sender could get a one pound box of assorted chocolates for free.

To limit the amount of sets that were redeemed, U.S. Caramel had to pick a president and print less cards of that subject, William McKinley. Those cards redeemed were sent back with a cancelled back stamp. SGC cert 9519872.
