Six examples of the 1888 Old Judge Cigarettes fold-out trade card An Interesting Interview by Goodwin & Co., lithographed by Giles. The back advertises the N173 Old Judge baseball cabinet photographs, offered for 25 coupons and covering every player of prominence.

This small group of Old Judge metamorphic trade cards has been freshly scanned and reviewed against the Old Judge Book / reference guide. Only two (2) variations pictured in Figure 2 and Figure 3 on page 63 of the Old Judge Book remain absent:

  • Figure 2 variation — “35” overprinted with “25” in pink

  • Figure 3 variation — Red diagonal overprint reading “Send us 25 empty covers… in place of 35 slips…”

While these specific types are not included, the cards offered are authentic Old Judge metamorphic examples with strong period print and the familiar umbrella‑tab design. Variation collecting within this issue is notably difficult, and redemption‑related overprints represent some of the most elusive forms.

Recent market activity highlights the demand for Old Judge advertising material: a single advertisement realized $450 in the 2026 Huggins & Scott Summer Auction (Lot 72).

Items tied to the N173 redemption program continue to perform strongly, and metamorphic cards fall squarely within that same collector interest.
